Waffle-Crete Mantag System buildings are constructed of large, precast reinforced dense concrete ribbed panels bolted together to form the external walls, floor and pitched roof of the building. The joints between the external wall panels and roof panels are caulked and sealed. The roof may also be of pitched timber truss construction with conventional profiled, galvanised steel or fibre-cement sheets, or tiled roof coverings.

On suitable sites, the external walls are supported on horizontal Waffle-Crete floor panels spanning between Waffle-Crete grade-beams laid parallel to each other on well compacted earth. Alternatively, the walls may be supported on a conventional cast in situ concrete surface bed with thickened edge-beams, or on conventional cast in situ concrete strip footings, depending on the soil conditions and slope of the site.

Internal walls consist of Waffle-Crete panels bolted together as described above, or conventional masonry walls or drywalling, or a combination of these.

The upgraded versions of the system include installing ceilings and cladding the Waffle-Crete external and internal wails with gypsum plasterboard and insulating the wall and ceiling cavities if required.

Services are conventional and are normally installed in preformed slots in the ribs of Waffle-Crete panels before cladding the walls.

This Mantag certificate covers the use of the Waffle-Crete Mantag System in selected areas in all climatic zones of South Africa for the erection of single storey buildings for the following uses:

Mantag certificates are a distinct type of Agrément certificate, based on acceptable safety and health criteria for houses and related outbuildings, non-residential schools and primary health-care facilities in areas where the local authority is of the opinion that the type of construction is appropriate, given that in these areas it is of paramount importance that buildings be erected at the lowest possible cost.

If the conditions of this certificate are complied with, Agrément South Africa is of the opinion that the Waffle-Crete Mantag System will be fit-for-purpose, and can therefore be regarded as complying with the functional requirements related to safety and health contained in the National Building Regulations. In general, however, Mantag criteria permit a lesser level of performance than would be expected from buildings erected in accordance with the deemed-to-satisfy rules contained in SABS 0400-l990.

Design Recommendations

Where Waffle-Crete buildings do not comply with the structural requirements and dimensional limitations and must therefore be designed by a professional engineer, it is strongly recommended that reference be made to the structural evaluation report by Hugo & Partners, dated September 1996, which forms part of the Waffle-Crete design manual and is available from the certificate holder. The report does not cover buildings constructed of Waffle-Crete panels with recessed bolt holes if they exceed these structural and dimensional limitations.
