Geotex 500 and 600 series fibres are crimped, macro-synthetic fibres which are manufactured from a natural polypropylene homo polymer. The fibres are manufactured in a continuous process of heated polypropylene and then stretched to improve tensile strength. The 500 series fibres, which are black or white in colour, are 30 mm, 40 mm and 50 mm in length with a diameter of 0.9 mm. The 600 series fibres, which are grey in colour, are 30 mm, 40 mm and 50 mm in length with a diameter of 0.8 mm. Geotex 500 and 600 series fibres have a density ranging between 0.88 – 0.9 kg/m3.
When used in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidelines, the fibres will help to reduce plastic shrinkage cracking in both reinforced as well as unreinforced concrete. The fibres will also impart toughness and impact resistance to concrete. These fibres should be regarded as an additive to be used in addition to any specified reinforcement and movement joints rather than as an alternative to reinforcement and movement joints.
They are typically used:
- in industrial, commercial and residential slabs, beams, columns and pavements, etc
- in thin-section pre-cast concrete components such as wall panels
Unless a competent design professional specifies otherwise, Geotex 500 and 600 Series fibres shall be added at the dosage rate of 1 bag of Geotex fibres per cubic metre of concrete (i.e. 3 kg/m3).
This certificate and Agrément South Africa’s assessment apply only to Geotex 500 and 600 series Macro-Synthetic Fibres that are manufactured and used as described and illustrated in this certificate, and where the terms and conditions of certification are complied with.
